Ohio’s regional psychiatric hospitals are dedicated to caring for people in need by providing innovative, quality and effective psychiatric health services.
Over the last two decades, these hospitals have steadily changed to become smaller, more specialized facilities, providing short-term and intensive treatment linked to community needs and priorities. They also provide care to patients committed by criminal courts.
Today the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) operates regional psychiatric hospitals in six locations across the state. Working in collaboration with county boards and community agencies, expert services built on evidence-based best practices are provided. These hospitals offer comprehensive services to patients in both an inpatient and community-supported environment. Services provided at our hospitals focus on maximizing the potential for recovery so that people with mental illness will be successful and satisfied in their preferred community roles with the level of support needed and wanted.
One of the major priorities for the ODMH Hospital Service Division is to acknowledge and promote improvements in the quality, consistency and efficiency of the clinical care within the regional psychiatric hospital (RPH) system. A report issued in December 2011 describes our work toward a System of Care Strategic Plan that drives improvements within our hospitals to better serve our consumers and the citizens of Ohio. The pervasiveness and high cost of mental illness does not affect only the mental health system; the general health system also feels the strain. To address these themes, ODMH Hospital Services has published a 2010 report on "Ohio's Acute Mental Health Care." It was completed to update the previous 2004 report of the status of “The Crisis in Ohio’s Acute Mental Heath Care: A Mental Health and Overall Health Problem.” The updated report calls renewed attention to acute care issues that are continuing to plague many states, including Ohio, and the adverse effect of these issues on the total health care system.
