Outcomes Planning & Training Tools
Planning Checklist (Word or PDF)
This checklist specifies the recommended activities for successful implementation and maintenance of the Outcomes System. Based on findings from the Outcomes Pilot, the checklist divides implementation into four phases and lists the activities that need to occur in each phase, the responsible entities and the resources available to assist in completing the activities.
Outcomes 101
These PowerPoint slides are a good source of basic information about the various aspects of the Ohio Mental Health Outcomes System, including the history of the system, a description of the instruments and administration intervals, uses of the outcomes data, implementation products and resources and the data flow process. They are available for educational and training purposes with two caveats: ODMH is identified as the author of the slides, and if substantial modifications or changes are made to the slides, the new author must be identified as the source.
Ohio Scales Training Resources
The materials in this section focus on using the ohio youth problems, functioning and satisfaction scales (Ohio scales) in treatment planning with youth and families. A link to the Ohio scales training video produced by the Southern Consortium for Children (SCC) and Dr. Ben Ogles is included.
Key Facilitators and Barriers to Implementation
This report summarizes interviews with the 26 agencies that have consistently submitted the highest percentage of outcomes data. Agencies were asked what facilitated and hindered the collection, flow and use of outcomes data in treatment planning and quality improvement, as well as how they used the data to fulfill accreditation requirements. Strategies for improvement are presented.
Outcomes Toolkit
A series of educational materials known as the Outcomes Toolkit has been designed to assist agencies in implementing the Outcomes System. The toolkit includes a variety of training products: handbooks for consumers, clinical staff and administrators; a brochure for clients that describes the Outcomes System; a clinical re-engineering Powerpoint presentation and a series of videos directed toward youth, adults, clinical supervisors and direct service staff.
Outcomes & Recovery
The materials in this section are based on the Ohio Department of Mental Health's (ODMH) Emerging Best Practices in Mental Health Recovery Model as it relates to the Outcomes System. The materials include presentations from trainings conducted to give clinicians and clinical supervisors tools for developing recovery-oriented goals and interventions with adult consumers based on individual-level data from the Outcomes System.
Empowerment Training
This training package is designed for consumers, clinicians and supervisors who would like to learn about the uses of the empowerment scale and its subscales.
Re-Engineering Source Books
The appearance of outcomes onto the behavioral health scene gives agencies an opportunity to reconsider how they do business. These four manuals provide guidance about how a behavioral healthcare organization can re-conceptualize and re-engineer their operations to more efficiently and effectively complete their mission.

Consumer Outcomes & Elderly Adults
This article addresses concerns expressed by mental health providers in regard to the usefulness and practicality of administering the consumer outcomes instruments to adults aged 65 and over. Recent research has shown that this population has the highest rate of completed suicides of any other age group. In this article you will find suggestions on how best to collect the data and use it in clinically meaningful ways.
