Residency and Traineeship Program

The Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) Residency and Training Program funds the training of mental health professionals, including psychiatric residents and students of psychology, nurses, social workers and others to serve adults and children in Ohio's public mental health system. The program recruits and retains highly qualified mental health professionals and promotes linkages to local systems and stakeholders.

Residency and Training Program grant funds are used primarily to support faculty in providing training relevant to public mental health. There is an expectation that applicants will obtain collaborative financial support by engaging community stakeholders and others (e.g., supplemental salary from boards and community agencies and/or grants from public and private foundations). Priority is given to applicants who seek to develop self-sustaining and enduring programs within their colleges and universities. View the current Residency & Training Program priorities.

Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) Program

The ODMH Integrated Clinical Care section has responsibility for the Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) program for mental health service providers in Ohio. Applicants are encouraged to consider opportunities available through HPSA to provide support and assistance to trainees that pursue practicum experiences and employment opportunities in underserved communities (see HPSA map).

Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health (SEARCH) Program

The Student/Resident Experiences and Rotations in Community Health (SEARCH) Program provides funding for graduate students to complete community service projects in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) (see HPSA map). The ODMH Integrated Clinical Care section, in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Health, has been awarded SEARCH program funds for the purpose of increasing access to mental health services in underserved areas in Ohio.
