Ohio Department of Mental Health Housing

Housing

Having one’s own home — whether it is an apartment, a furnished room, or a house — is the cornerstone of independence for people. Safe, decent, permanent, and affordable housing that is not dependent upon the acceptance of treatment is a critical component of engagement, resiliency, and recovery and is foundational in a person’s life for establishing stability, independence, and instilling hope. The goal of the Ohio Department of Mental Health's (ODMH) Adult Housing Policy is to collaborate in efforts that strengthen a continuum of community housing options ranging from adult care facilities (ACF) to supportive housing to home ownership. Housing is essential to prevent homelessness and to reduce institutional recidivism from places such as jails, prisons, nursing homes, and psychiatric hospitals (source: ODMH Adult Housing Policy).

Interagency Council on Homelessness and
Affordable Housing

All Ohioans need and deserve decent, safe and sanitary housing.  Regrettably, a significant number of Ohioans are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless because of the escalating costs of basic needs including healthcare and energy expenses.  Representatives from ODMH are working with 15 other state agencies and eight community advocacy groups on the Interagency Council on Homelessness and Affordable Housing to shape policies and programs that address the housing needs of those Ohioans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.
