Partners and Collaborators
To ensure that quality mental health care is available to all Ohioans, the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) leads and participates in a number of statewide initiatives.
Assertive Community Treatment (ACT)
ACT is a nationally recognized, evidence-based practice that addresses symptom management and everyday problems of people with severe mental illness who are not well engaged in traditional services. It includes a multidisciplinary team approach, crisis response and assertive outreach.
Behavioral Health Leadership
The Behavioral Health Leadership Group is a statewide advisory team for mental health and substance abuse policy issues. The general purpose of the group is to provide an ongoing education and communication forum for FY12/13 around behavioral health policy changes.
Block Grant
ODMH administers the federal Community Mental Health Services Block Grant from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. These funds enhance evidence-based practices, quality improvement and consumer outcomes to support the values of recovery, resiliency and cultural competence. Block grant funding is used to support consumer and family advocacy groups, consumer and family-operated educational programs and consumer and family participation in planning mental health services.
Community Medicaid
While the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services offers assistance to consumers applying for Medicaid benefits, the ODMH Office of Medicaid works with county mental health boards to assure that state Medicaid requirements are met by those providing mental health services to consumers.
Consumer and Family Partnership Team
The Consumer and Family Partnership Team (CFPT) was designed to increase and strengthen consumer and family representation on ODMH committees and workgroups. Team membership includes consumers, family members and ODMH representatives.
Coordinating Centers of Excellence
CCOEs were established by ODMH to address critical needs of adults and children affected by serious emotional disturbances and/or mental illness. Each center promotes specific evidence-based practices and clinical best practices through training, consultation, fidelity assessment and/or outcomes evaluation. CCOE partners include Ohio universities, consumer and family advocacy groups, local mental health boards and provider organizations and research entities.
Emergency Preparedness
ODMH and its collaborative partners are developing plans and strategies to anticipate and meet Ohio's behavioral health care needs when disaster strikes. A number of materials are available to assist Ohioans in understanding the behavioral health effects that children, youth, adults, the elderly, first responders and emergency workers might experience during and after a traumatic event.
Forensic Services
The interface between the mental health and criminal justice systems is significant. ODMH collaborates with involved constituencies to develop forensic policies, propose forensic programs, assist in forensic legislation and provide clinical and organizational forensic consultation, education and training.
Intensive Home Based Treatment (IHBT)
IHBT is an intensive service for children and youth to live and function successfully in their homes, schools and communities. It is intended to prevent or provide transition from out-of-home placement.
Mental Health and School Success
Ohio has been recognized nationally as a leader in building and expanding collaboration across education, mental health and family-serving organizations in developing a shared agenda for children's mental health and academic success.
Office of Support Services
This office provides certain goods and services to these departments: Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities; Rehabilitation and Correction and Youth Services. It also provides goods and services to other state, county or municipal agencies. The goods and services include procurement, storage, distribution of food, pharmaceuticals, medical and laboratory supplies, dental supplies, medical records, forms, optical supplies and sundries.
Pre-Admission Screening and Resident Review (PASRR)
PASRR determines whether or not an individual who has an active diagnosis of mental illness meets Medicaid criteria for needing a nursing facility and specialized services.
Suicide Prevention
In Ohio, suicide is the ninth leading cause of death, and the third leading cause among young adults. Local suicide prevention coalitions have been formed in many counties, and a number of initiatives are currently underway to raise awareness, eliminate stigma, promote suicide prevention as a public health issue and increase help-seeking behavior.
