September event to showcase progress of federal mental health grant to Ohio
The Ohio Department of Mental Health will host an event Sept. 8 at the Riffe Center's Capitol Theatre to celebrate Ohio's progress under the Mental Health Transformation State Incentive Grant (TSIG). The schedule from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. will include significant involvement from mental health consumers (youth and adults) and their families. Between 10 a.m. and noon, a program will feature directors from state agencies and other dignitaries. Read the release. Register to attend.

Behavioral Health System Administrative Cost Study Findings Released
Public Consulting Group of Boston has delivered to ODMH its Findings and Recommendations Report relative to the Behavioral Health System Administrative Cost Study conducted via Ohio's Transformation State Incentive Grant (TSIG) from the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Consumer Advocacy and Protection (CAP) Office publishes quarterly briefs
ODMH’s CAP Office began publishing “Empowerment & Advocacy Brief” in January 2010 and has just released its third issue. The intent of the emailed and online publication is to update stakeholders on information within ODMH and across the state as it relates to the work of the CAP Office.

Applications for temporary health insurance being accepted for Ohioans with pre-existing conditions
Federal health care reform law requires states to set up a temporary health insurance program – or “high risk pool” – for uninsured people with preexisting health conditions, including several mental illnesses. This program will last until 2014, when full federal reforms will take effect. Enrollment for Ohio’s high risk pool started on August 1st. Funding for the program is limited so applications will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Learn more about the Ohio High Risk Pool.

Top administrator for NAMI Ohio sought to lead grassroots efforts
NAMI Ohio is seeking an experienced professional to represent the agency as its Executive Director. NAMI Ohio is responsible for assisting 55 community affiliates and for representing more than 550,000 citizens of the state and their families who struggle with stigma, discrimination and challenges in receiving life-saving care. Northwest CEO retires, search committee forms to seek replacement
Terry Smith, CEO of Northwest Ohio Psychiatric Hospital in Toledo, retired July 31 after 34 years with ODMH. Kathy Anthony, R.N., Ed.D., at NOPH was appointed acting CEO, effective Aug. 1. ODMH is in the process of assembling a search committee to proceed with the selection of the next CEO.

2008 Ohio Family Health Survey: Special Population Report Available
As part of the TSIG activity, the Ohio Department of Mental Health provided funding to the Health Policy Institute of Ohio and the OSU College of Medicine Government Resource Center for a special population data collection in the 2008 Ohio Family Health Survey. Results were analyzed in late 2009 and findings are now published in a Special Population Report, which looks at demographics, insurance coverage, health conditions, risk behaviors, healthcare access, and unmet needs for individuals with Serious Psychological Distress.

The ODMH Office of Support Services (OSS) provides certain warehouse and pharmacy goods and services to other state, county and municipal agencies.

Federal Health Care Reform

Health care reform will expand coverage to millions of Americans and require changes to health insurance products and the regulations that govern them. A health care reform web site has been developed for Ohioans to visit and sign up for alerts on implementation issues. This site includes a section link to news specific to Behavioral Health. Coverage of mental health and alcohol and drug addiction treatment services will be a part of the basic benefit package that insurers will be required to offer.
